Residents of Ashby Avenue and Rollesby Road, Chessington, are increasingly overwhelmed by the volume of vehicles using these roads as a rat run.
Vehicles turn off Moor Lane and use these side roads as a shortcut, via Garrison Lane, to reach the A243 Leatherhead Road. This shortcut avoids the longer, slower route via Bridge Road and the Bridge Road/Mansfield Road roundabout onto the Leatherhead Road. The rat run is also used in the opposite direction.
CDRA has asked the South of the Borough Neighbourhood Committee and Kingston Council’s highways team to install ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras to help stop the rat run and control the speed of the vehicles.
Installing cameras at Moor Lane/Ashby Avenue and Garrison Lane would record the average speed for the journey between the two points. Drivers travelling over the legal speed of 20 mph for the journey would be fined. The cameras would capture vehicles driving in either direction.
Speed bumps just do not work and are a waste of time and money.
