Work is underway on the two-year £110m redevelopment of Tolworth mental health hospital. The re-development will see a new five-ward hospital building, providing state-of-the-art accommodation for seven acute, older persons and specialists mental health wards, along with a range out outpatient services which will open in late 2027. The scheme, by South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, aims to help break stigma around mental health by opening up the site to the community. There will be new and improved landscaping, access routes, a central plaza and a café.
History
The hospital was established by The Kingston Rural Sanitary Authority in 1889 to serve as an infectious diseases facility for 22 patients. It joined the NHS in 1948, with significant modernisation in the 1960s that saw many older structures replaced. In 2004, the hospital came under the management of the South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust, which unveiled redevelopment plans in 2015.
Competition to name the new hospital
The chosen name will define the building’s identity, reinforcing its status as a contemporary facility designed to serve the local community for years to come. The winning entry will be revealed later this year.
