Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust has landed in the top quarter of England’s acute hospital trusts, ranking 31st out of 134 in the NHS’s first-ever national performance league table.
The new Aggregated Metric Ranking (AMR) system scores trusts on a broad mix of measures – from A&E wait times and elective treatment delays to cancer care, financial health, and patient experience. Lower scores reflect stronger performance. Based on data from April to June 2025, Kingston and Richmond scored 1.77, while neighbouring Epsom and St Helier came in at 61st with a score of 2.3.
Despite Kingston and Richmond’s solid score, both trusts were placed in Segment 3 of the NHS performance framework – a mid-tier category indicating areas where further improvement is needed.
The top three performers nationally were Moorfields Eye Hospital, Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, and The Christie in Manchester. Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn ranked lowest.
Kingston and Richmond’s ranking is especially notable given the Trust was only formed in November 2024, following the merger of Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust. NHS England has acknowledged that mergers can impact results, with stronger trusts often inheriting challenges such as long waiting lists.
A spokesperson for Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust said:
“We welcome the new framework as an opportunity for people to better understand their local healthcare services. We’re proud that our performance in areas like access, elective and cancer care, and patient experience reflects the dedication of our staff. We remain focused on learning, improving, and working with partners to do even better.”
Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, said the new rankings will boost transparency and accountability. From next year, top-performing trusts will gain more freedom to shape local services, while those struggling may receive extra support – and in some cases, face leadership pay cuts.
Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust oversees both Kingston Hospital and Teddington Memorial Hospital.
